Artistic Journeys  in Paintings

Each piece in this grouping concerns the human condition. Whether figurative or abstract, they serve as a personal narrative that captures moments of introspection, wonder, and transformation. Through these visual stories, I invite viewers to explore both the familiar and the fantastical, forging connections that transcend the boundaries of the seen.

The Rebbe
Very automatique surrealist

(Excerpt from Washington Post) Automatic surrealism, a significant element of the broader Surrealist movement, centers around the concept of automatism—allowing the unconscious mind to guide creative expression. This method, deeply rooted in psychoanalysis, particularly the ideas of Sigmund Freud, sought to bypass the conscious mind’s control to unlock the inner workings of the unconscious. Here’s a brief history:

Origins of Surrealism: Surrealism emerged in the early 20th century, around 1924, as a response to the disillusionment of post-World War I society. It grew out of Dadaism, a movement characterized by its rebellion against traditional art norms. Surrealists, led by French poet André Breton, sought to tap into the unconscious and liberate creativity from rational thought and societal norms.

“Androgynous Muse: Geometric Depths.” This artwork is a journey into the profound themes of androgyny and gender identity, explored through a mixed-media approach. It presents an abstract face composed of geometric shapes and muted tones, interwoven with textures and patterns that add layers of complexity. The addition of embedded text offers depth to the composition. The contrast between the subdued colors and the elegant gold frame creates a visual impact. This piece was an adventure in collage techniques, allowing me to blend diverse materials and forms. I hope “Androgynous Muse” invites reflection and sparks conversations around the fluid nature of identity.
The Immigrant
Chiaroscuro Whirl: The Geometry of Faces.
The artwork, “An Ode to Sappho”, includes a representation of a human form, abstract yet full of life, much like the timeless lyrics of Sappho. The piece was inspired by the divine, the gentle muse of goddesses, and the resonant sound of a twelve-string guitar. It embodies a collection of mixed media that conjures images of layered papers and earthy tones, woven together in a song that feels both structured and unrestrained.
The women are coming

This piece was a unique process, particularly as I explored the woman-identified motif of head dresses and headwear. These elements found their way into the painting not only in form but in spirit, influencing each stroke and hue. In this abstract depiction, I hope viewers can glimpse the intersection of grace and power often symbolized by such adornments, woven seamlessly into the texture of the artwork.

This piece is an invitation to peer into the shifting beauty of an abstract world where the boundary between reality and dreams blurs. It’s more than just a visual journey—it’s a call to experience the fluidity of motion and the spectrum of emotion captured on canvas.

Starlit Chagall: The Cosmic Aleph Rises” invites you to stand beneath the imaginary sky, to reflect on beginnings, connections, and the cosmic tapestry that binds us all. The Aleph is enlarged and center staged, because of its inherent meaning of the beginning or a unified number 1, or the greatest. It references Chagall as the greatest Jewish painter. Also, there is a spiritual significance to The Aleph, it stands as a conduit between the observer and the infinite reaches of the cosmos, and to the ein sof (a mystical Jewish reference to infinity.) There is also a personal reference to the Aleph, it is the symbol for my favorite Israeli Newspaper, Haaretz.
Overall, “Starlit Chagall: The Cosmic Aleph Rises” is an artwork that invites the viewer to ponder the infinite, the abstract, and the personal; and through the executed Aleph and celestial theme, to explore the cosmic and spiritual realms.
